Exhibition: Last Place In The World Research Exhibit

May 21 - June 14, 2025

Payton Burkhammer’s residency focuses on completing the initial draft of her first feature-length screenplay, a women-led road trip film inspired by the landscapes and unique landmarks of the Midwest. Exploring themes of placemaking, the passage of time, and fate versus choice, the project delves into how life’s pivotal decisions shape our journeys. Iconic locations like the Field of Corn, the World’s Largest Basket, and The Mothman Museum serve as both cultural symbols and a reflection of belonging. During the residency, Burkhammer will conduct location research, document landmarks through photographs and quotes, and create a research and development exhibit showcasing how these elements inform her screenplay.

An award-winning indie filmmaker, Burkhammer is based in Akron, Ohio, and has earned accolades such as Best Narrative Film at the Highland Square Film Festival and the Audience Choice Award at the Short Sweet Film Festival. She is a founding member of Girl Set Cleveland and has participated in programs like the Cleveland Indie Film Incubator. Through this residency, she aims to take a major step in her film career while celebrating the Midwest's distinctive charm and storytelling potential.
