Shani Richards
January 2020
Shani Richards, a visual artist and metalsmith, explores the complexities of race, social status, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, and class through her art. Her fascination with the word N-i-g-g-e-r and its reclamation by the black community serves as a catalyst for her exhibition titled "United." The exhibition features pendants adorned with racial and ethnic slurs, sexual orientation, and gender pronouns. Emphasizing audience participation and conversation, viewers are encouraged to wear a pendant of their choice, sparking discussions on social media beyond the Akron community.
In addition to her artistic endeavors, Shani Richards engages with her community through a threefold approach: delivering lectures on her practice, fostering social media conversations derived from gallery interactions, and conducting workshops. Through her work, she aims to encourage open dialogue on race relations, urging Americans to confront the complexities of our multicultural world and take steps towards reconciliation.
United on view at Akron Soul Train Mar 5, 2020 - Tue, May 5, 2020.
